On June 16th, 2021, the NPC Malawi hosted a Media Panel to promote the findings of the Malawi Priorities Technical Report on Primary Education. The panel featured a Hon. Ephraim Billy Nayeja, Parliamentary Deputy Chair for Committee on Education, Science & Technology, and Priscilla Chimwele, National Youth Core Advisory Panel, as Moderator. This Media Panel was preceded by an OpEd in the Daily Times and the Nations Newspaper, which ran on March 30, 2021 and discussed the findings of the paper.

As the foremost intervention emerging from this analysis, Technology Assisted Learning, bears the highest ranking BCR of the Malawi Priorities, this analysis was highlighted at the Malawi Priorities’ final Prioritization Workshop, scheduled for January 2022. The findings of this paper were Presented to Parliamentary Committee meetings during budget sessions, and informed the discussion in the chamber as they deliberated the passing of the 2020/2021 National Budget.

Key Outcomes:

The initial findings of the analysis on Child Marriage were presented to the Malawi Protection Cluster at a Research Webinar on April 12, 2021. The discussion generated at the webinar led to more nuanced and improved accuracy of the findings, in addition to opening the discussion on the use of cost-benefit analysis in making the case for internvetions surrounding Child Marriage and Girls Secondary Education. The findings of the Technical Report were later presented at a Media Panel hosted by the NPC, which focused on comparing the efficiency of different Early Childhood and Girls’ Schooling interventions for Human Resource Capital and Health outcomes. The NPC later hosted a Workshop on Interventions focused on Early Childhood Development and Early Child Marriage in September 2021. The workshop focused on defining how ECD and ECM are linked to human capital which lines up very well with the Vision 2063. The workshop brought together the three ministries which need to start working together in an integrated fashion as a whole-cycle approach on these issues (Gender, Education, Health). There is a need for a paper to determine the linkage between ECD and ECM, to act as a foundation for a more integrated policy and programmatic approach. The findings were also used to inform discussion at the National Symposium on Ending Child Marriage, held from Nov. 9-12, 2021.
